After a PhD in Physics (in TCM), I decided I wanted to use the data science skills I had developed in a more applied way. My research now focuses on developing a better understanding of mental health conditions, using different types of data (primarily brain MRI and speech data) and methods drawn from network science, machine learning and Natural Language Processing. I am currently an Accelerate Science Research Fellow at the Cambridge Computer Lab and a Senior Research Associate in the Psychiatry Department. I am also a Fellow at The Alan Turing Institute, where I lead a project investigating the potential of speech data to predict risk for psychotic disorders.

What advice would you like to give to aspiring physicists?

That career paths are non-linear and very few people know what they're going to be doing more than a few years ahead. The trick is to spot interesting opportunities as they arise and take them. Having a background in physics gives you an amazing skill set to be able to do that!
